Scammers now target government agencies on a regular basis. Case in point: an effort now apparently using callers impersonating workers with the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.
The KBI says scammers are identifying themselves as agents or detectives — or from the state’s offender registry. The call revolves around payment requests, allegedly to close criminal cases.
The KBI says it may call people related to cases, in some cases to arrange interviews. However, it will not call people to request Social Security numbers, credit cared informatin, dates of birth or other personal information. The KBI also urges residents not to offer personal information or to transfer funds unless they initiated the call.
If a caller is acting suspiciously or appears to have a sense of urgency when calling you, the KBI says your best move is to hang up, find the published number for the agency or service the caller allegedly represents and then call the number to verify you got a legitimate call.
