Pretrial and arraignment is set for mid-May after a fatal wreck near Emporia this past April.
On Friday, Judge Jeff Larson reset arraignment for May 10 in the case against Travis Duane Edwards after several motions were filed. Prosecutors asked for a prime jury trial setting, or hard start date, with Edwards facing two counts of second-degree murder and two alleged victims living out of state. Prosecutors also asked for reciprocal discovery and for an order in limine, meaning “any improper and prejudicial” statements are excluded during jury selection, opening statements and closing arguments.
Defense attorney Rick Meier, meanwhile, has asked for Edwards’ bond to be lowered from $50,000 to $25,000 so he can get heart-related medical treatments. The bond modification request will be heard at a separate but related hearing March 21.
Edwards, a semi driver, is charged will killing 29-year-old Ryan Miller of Independence, MIssouri, and 32-year-old Jacob Suenram of Lawrence as part of a five-vehicle fatality wreck on US Highway 50 near Road C on April 5. Edwards and three others were hurt.
