The #10 Missouri Southern Baseball team swept Emporia State in a three-game MIAA series over the weekend. After falling in game one, the Hornets allowed Southern to get off to another fast start Saturday in an 11-7 defeat to the Lions. ESU plated two in the first but allowed Southern to snatch the lead away with four runs in the bottom of the first. Trailing 5-2 going into the fourth, the Hornets plated one then briefly took the lead on a grand slam to right field by Logan Myers, but the Hornet defense couldn’t hold as Southern scored an early unearned run before a Hornet error allowed the tying run to score leading to another unearned run that put Southern back on top 8-7 through five. The Lions added three more in the seventh to ice the game. Myers finished the game 2-for-5 with two runs, and 4 RBIs coming on the grand slam.
In game three, it was the Lions snatching the win late with an 11-8 victory to earn the sweep over the Hornets. MoSo crept into the lead with a run in the second and one in the third before ESU tied the match on solo home runs by Dom Oliverio and Joe Daneff. Southern quickly got the lead back with a run in the fifth and four runs in the sixth. The Hornets tied the game at 8-all with four runs in the eighth, but the ESU bullpen couldn’t hold allowing three Lion runs in the bottom of the eighth. Oliverio finished 5-for-5 in the game with two runs and one RBI while Kadyn Williams went 3-for-5 with four RBIs. E-State drops to 12-11 on the season and 3-6 in the MIAA and hosts Pittsburg State for game one of their MIAA midweek series Tuesday at the Trusler Sports Complex. First pitch is set for 3:00 p.m.
