The No. 12 Wichita State men’s basketball team withstood a 17-2 Memphis run to hang on for a 71-65 victory over the No. 5 Tigers in the second round of the American Athletic Conference Tournament on Thursday in Fort Worth Texas. Leading by two at the break, the Shockers built a 14-point lead with around 10 minutes to go before the Tigers began their charge, finally taking their first lead of the half at 59-58 with 3:30 to go. The Shockers responded with seven-straight points after that and didn’t give up the lead again. Harlond Beverly led the way with 17 points for WSU as the Shockers hit 47% of their shots while holding the Tigers to 36% shooting. Wichita State moves to 15-18 overall and will face No. 4 seed Alabama-Birmingham in the quarterfinals. UAB received a double bye to the round of eight. Tip-off is set for 2:00 p.m Friday.
