Voter turnout has been extremely light for the upcoming Presidential Preference Primary election.
According to Lyon County Clerk and Election Office Tammy Vopat, the projected turnout is right around 2.5 percent. In terms of advance voting, 306 individuals cast their ballots in person with just over 190 of the 300 mail ballots sent out returned as of Monday morning.
Voters must have their mail ballots into the clerk’s office by 7 pm Tuesday for them to be counted. The Presidential Preference Primary, the first held in Kansas in 30 years, will run from 7 am to 7 pm Tuesday.
All polling places used in last year’s election cycle will be available to voters Tuesday. Although the election is coming Tuesday, both President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump have already locked down their respective party nominations.
Following the conclusion of Tuesday’s election, voter registration will reopen Wednesday and continue through July 16. The traditional primary election will take place August 6 followed by the general election on November 5.
The candidate filing and withdrawal deadline is June 3. For more information be sure to visit the election office page under the government drop-down tab online at Lyoncounty.org.
