The Flint Hills Technical College’s Culinary Arts Department has two activities for the public this week.
On Thursday, Culinary Arts students will have several kinds of food prepared for a Proud to be a Kansan fundraiser. Instructor Brianna Bess says the event revolves around Kansas comfort foods, with entrees including Rocky Mountain oysters, bierocks, meat and meatless chili, fried catfish and mushroom stroganoff; sides like baked beans, cheesy potatoes, salad, coleslaw and sunflower rolls; and desserts like Kansas dirt cake, bread pudding and cinnamon rolls — all made by Culinary Arts students.
The event is at noon Thursday at the Flint Hills Technical College Metcalf Building’s Trusler Foundation Conference Center. Tickets are $20 for adults and $7 for children ages 10 and under with an adult present. People can email bbess@fhtc.edu or just get tickets at the door. Proceeds benefit students participating in various Skills USA competitions or roll into a fund for future contests.
On Saturday, the department will have “Cooking Together: A Caregiver and Child Culinary Experience.” Parents or guardians can bring children between ages 3-8 to make homemade spaghetti noodles, meatballs and chocolate chip cookies. Cost is $35. People can email bbess@fhtc.edu to reserve spots.
