The Emporia High softball team was swept in its season opening doubleheader to Ottawa Friday at Peter Pan Park.
Ottawa won the opener, 4-0, before taking the finale, 23-6, in five innings.
In game one, Ottawa scored twice in the first and one each in the third and fourth innings. Emporia High recorded seven hits in the contest but could not get a run across. Addie Kirmer and Clara Williams each had two hits. Alivia Anno went the distance, allowing four runs on eight hits and 10 strikeouts.
In game two, Ottawa jumped out to a 5-0 lead through half of an inning before Emporia High made things interesting. The Lady Spartans scored three in the inning beginning with an RBI single by Kirmer, an RBI single by Williams and Anno stealing home. After that, Ottawa scored 15 consecutive runs to lead 20-3 before Emporia High got back on the board. The Lady Spartans scored their final three runs in the third as Ryane Howe stole home, Yzabel Ultereas had an RBI triple and Atlyn Heffron had an RBI single. Williams went 2-for-2 at the plate.
Emporia High coach Tommy McClure said the Lady Spartans did not give up.
Emporia High (0-2) will host Wichita South at 1 p.m. Saturday at Peter Pan Park.
