Fourteen individuals and one team of individuals from USD 253 received awards from the Hopkins Foundation on Friday.
Walnut Elementary School Student Support Specialist Emely Magana and Kindergarten teacher Tamara Ehr received a check for $2,125 to kickstart the Walnut Spanish Club.
Ehr says they want to ‘bridge the gap’ and make their students as welcome as possible.
Ehr says the funds will start a trial run for the club in April and hopes to start it full-time next school year.
Timmerman Art teacher Emily Jaster receives $575 for students’ art displays. Jaster says the funds will help with shows the school puts on during parent-teacher conferences.
Hopkins Foundation Executive Vice President Michelle Hopkins-Molinaro says it’s important for her to continue the legacy of her grandparents.
Hopkins-Molinaro says this is one of her favorite times of the year, giving out grants and seeing the students.
Over $50,000 of grants were awarded. One more grant will be presented in North Lyon County on Monday.
