Following a successful foray into online auctions, the Emporia Animal Shelter and Humane Society of the Flint Hills are returning the public focus onto the number of pets needing homes.
The first-ever Auction for the Animals netted around $2,000 earlier this month, bringing a smile to Humane Society Director Stephanie Achille. The auction also followed a fundraising concert organized by the Emporia Symphony Orchestra, but it also comes when the shelter keeps maintaining its status of “always a level of full.” Under K-State guidance, the total amount of animals housed at the shelter should be under 40 with no space for emergency or court holds.
Achille has been mentioning the need for an expanded shelter at 1216 Hatcher, the need for a larger shelter or the need for a second shelter to meet the demand, and she reiterated that need during an interview on KVOE’s Morning Show recently. The Humane Society will continue conversations with the Emporia City Commission about its needs soon, especially with budget season beginning soon.
In the meantime, pet adoptions will be $25 per animal through the rest of March. More information is available on the Emporia Animal Shelter and Humane Society of the Flint Hills Facebook page.
