Winter-like cold is expected to continue through midweek and will be followed by a gradual warmup heading into the weekend.
The National Weather Service is anticipating sub-freezing temperatures as low as 21 degrees in the overnight to mid-morning hours Wednesday. Because of the biting cold, NWS has issued a freeze warning from midnight to 10 am Wednesday.
The warning covers Lyon, Coffey, Morris, Osage and Wabaunsee counties. The pending conditions could kill sensitive vegetation and damage exposed outdoor plumbing.
Residents should bring uncovered plants inside to protect them from the cold. Temperatures are expected to increase steadily in the coming days with highs in the low 50s forecasted Wednesday set to give way to air temperatures in the low to mid-70s heading into the Easter weekend.
