It was a strong showing for Emporia High athletes at the ESU High School Relays Friday at Welch Stadium.
Emporia High’s top finish came from sophomore Paige Newland, who won the triple jump with a personal-best mark of 36-02.25. Newland said she was happy with her performance.
Senior Blake Spellman finished second in the 400m dash with a time of 51.30, .05 behind first place. Spellman said he wished he wouldn’t have slowed down towards the end of the race.
Junior Daghyn True finished second in the 1,600m run (4:34.28) and was fourth in the 3,200m run (10:00.13). True said it was a good day.
Senior Sofia Ruvalcaba finished second in the 2,000m steeplechase (8:33.91) while senior Micah Sheffy-Harris finished fifth (9:05.38).
Senior Enrique Rios finished second in the discus with a throw of 143-11 while taking sixth in the shot put (43-03). Rios said he got a rhythm going after his first throw in the discus.
Junior Koby Le finished eighth in the event with a throw of 123-01.
Senior Mia Trujillo finished third in the discus with a throw of 106-01. Trujillo said the competition motivated her.
Senior Jeremiah Huber finished fourth in the pole vault with a clearance of 12-0.
Junior Brody Duncan finished fifth in the long jump with a mark of 20-10.
Sophomore Harley Smith finished fifth in the 400m dash (1:03.78) and eighth in the 200m dash (27.11).
Freshman Garrett LeBlanc finished sixth in the triple jump with (41-03).
The boys 4x400m relay of Spellman, Carter Granado, Harrison Trelc and Mason Jenkins finished seventh (3:41.03). The girls 4x400m relay of Smith, Lauren Williams, Lexsey Dewitt and Reagan Thompson finished sixth (4:23.10).
The boys 4x100m relay of Duncan, Calvin Seeley, Rylan Crowell and Jenkins finished seventh (45.32) The girls 4x100m relay of Thompson, Marley Mullen, Kaylee Dewitt and Newland finished eighth (53.36).
The girls 4x800m relay of Bailee Van Sickle, Leanna Lewis, Emma Beatty and Ruvalcaba finished seventh (11:40.01).
In the team standings, the Lady Spartans finished fifth with 41 points while the Spartans finished sixth with 58 points.
Besides Emporia High athletes competing, Northern Heights freshman Ellei McCrory ran in the 800m, 1,600m and 3,200m runs. McCrory recorded top 3 finishes in all three events. She won the 3,200m (11:10.02), took second in the 1,600m (5:14.25) and third in the 800m (2:25.36).
McCrory’s finishes recorded Northern Heights a ninth place finish in the team standings with 24 points.
Emporia High returns to action next Friday at Lansing.
