Area firefighters were busy in the early evening hours Saturday with a rash of brush fires.
The first fire was reported just after 5 pm near Roads 390 and X, a little over 32 miles northeast of Emporia. Allen Admire, Reading and Miller fire crews responded to the scene. Further details on this fire have not been announced.
Roughly an hour later, Emporia and Olpe fire crews were called to the 1200 block of Road J for a brush fire. According to Emporia Fire Batallion Chief Tony Fuller, the fire was caused after a wind shift blew embers from a previous controlled burn into a patch of unburned grass.
Fuller says the ensuing fire only scorched roughly three extra acres of grass and crews had it under control in less than 15 minutes. The rekindle was a “couple hundred yards” from a home in the area, however, Fuller says the structure was never in any true danger.
No injuries were reported.
Allen Admire, Reading and Miller crews would be called out to another brush fire, this time at mile marker 152 southbound on the Kansas Turnpike just before 9 pm. Details on that fire are currently pending.
