One of Emporia’s major infrastructure projects for the year has reached a significant milestone.
Work is still coming, but the city says the Peyton Street waterline improvement project is “substantially complete” as of this past Friday. The project was responsible for installing new water pipe along East 12th to Peyton, as well as Peyton from 12th to Sixth and South Avenue from Peyton to Carter — improving and solidifying water service for southeast Emporia, which currently has the city’s heaviest water use.
Over the next six weeks, the city’s contractor will add water meter lids in several yards. It will also oversee grass seeding and street sweeping.
Work began in September.
Separately, early work is underway for the Interstate 35 bridge replacement project over Lincoln Street. This will close the bridge soon through August 2025 and will also mean temporary crossover lanes on I-35.
As soon as next week, the Kansas Department of Transportation will start repaving US Highway 50 between Graphic Arts and Prairie Street. That project could last about five weeks.
By early June, work begins on the 24th and Prairie waterline replacement project, which will mean new pipe from 24th and Industrial east to Prairie and south to 12th. That project could last through 2025.
