On a day where the Royals got timely hits and great starting pitching for a win in Baltimore, the team suffered a resounding defeat from its own fans at the polls yesterday. A ballot measure that would have extended a 3/8 cent sales tax for another 40 years was soundly defeated with 58 percent of voters voting “No” to the extension of the tax. The Kansas City Election Board reported 24 percent turnout, well above their historical average for April municipal elections. The Royals have a lease at Kauffman Stadium through 2030, but the club has said they do not plan to remain there after that time. The tax would also have been used for upgrades and renovations at Arrowhead Stadium for the Chiefs. In a statement, Royals owner John Sherman said the club would “reflect on and process the outcome to find a path forward that works for the Royals and our fans.”
