Processes continue to speed towards the start of cashless tolling for the Kansas Turnpike this summer, and an area project now has a contract approved.
The Turnpike Authority approved a nearly $2 million bid from Bettis Asphalt & Construction to demolish several toll plazas, including the Admire-Council Grove exit at mile marker 147, 20 miles north of the Emporia gate — which already has a contract approved for similar work through Dondlinger & Sons.
The Turnpike Authority says work, which also includes lane configuration, will be finished at any time between late July 2024 and mid-November 2025.
Cashless tolling is set to begin in June. Other related work the past several years has included bridge raising and gantry construction.
Speaking of Turnpike construction work, Turnpike Authority CEO Steve Hewitt is set to have a virtual media announcement at 10 am Friday on the KTA Facebook page. Specifics have not been announced, but the Turnpike Authority has referenced the change to cashless tolling as part of its statement announcing the update.
