With April being Child Abuse Prevention Month and Sexual Assault Awareness Month, SOS has a full month of activities planned.
The next activity is Take Back the Night at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at C of E Park.
SOS Community Relations Coordinator Cara Codney says it uses the event to highlight what people can do to prevent sexual assault and abuse. Codney says people will be able to speak out amongst other activities during the event.
SOS Assistant Executive Director and Therapist Kathryn Wilkerson says this event gives attendees a chance to tell their story about abuse, which can be an ‘isolating experience’ in their life.
After Tuesday’s event, SOS will host 2022 Miss Kansas Ayanna Schumacher at 6 p.m. on April 18 at Flint Hills Technical College.
Child Abuse Prevention Month focuses on the prevention of child abuse and neglect and recognizes the importance of families and communities working together to prevent child abuse and neglect. Sexual Assault Awareness Month promotes awareness and prevention but recently has focused more on the role that all people have in preventing sexual violence.
