A severe thunderstorm watch is now in place through the early evening hours for portions of the KVOE listening area.
Lyon, Chase, Greenwood, Morris and Wabaunsee counties are under a watch now through 9 pm. The major risks with any storms that develop will be high winds between 60 to 70 mph and large hail up to the size of quarters and half dollars.
The greatest risk for severe activity lies west of US Highway 75 with the the timeframe for storm development coming in the early to mid-evening hours. On top of the severe storm watch, wind advisories remain in place for Lyon, Coffey, Greenwood, Osage and Wabausnee counties until 8 pm.
High wind warnings also continue for Chase and Morris counties until 8 pm as well.

High winds and stormy conditions are ahead for the first half of the weekend.
A wind advisory is in place for Lyon, Coffey, Greenwood, Osage and Wabausnee counties from noon to 8 pm Saturday reflecting the possibility of wind speeds up to 55 mph at times. Separately, high wind warnings affect Chase and Morris counties also from noon to 8 pm.
Due to the blustery conditions, outdoor burning will be strongly discouraged throughout the day. On top of the windy conditions, there is a marginal-to-slight severe weather risk for the area.
The majority of Lyon County, the eastern edge of Osage County and the entirety of Chase, Morris and Wabaunsee counties along with the majority of Lyon County are covered in the slight risk area with the remainder of the listening area covered by a marginal risk. Quarter to half-dollar-sized hail and wind gusts up to 65 mph are the main concerns.
The most likely timeframe for storm development is between the mid-afternoon to early evening hours with the greatest risk lying just west of US Highway 75.
Conditions are expected to improve by Sunday which currently has no weather alerts to speak of. That being said, current forecasts are calling for wind gusts up to 45 mph by the afternoon hours meaning outdoor burning will be highly discouraged yet again.
