The Emporia State baseball team fell twice this weekend to lose their series 2-1 at Missouri Western.
On Saturday, it was a walk-off wild pitch that doomed the Hornets in a 7-6 loss to the Griffons. Western jumped out to a 3-0 lead through two before the Hornets took the lead in the top of the sixth with five-straight runs. ESU scored on a ground out in the third, a fielder’s choice and an error in the fourth, a T. J. Racherbaumer double in the fifth, and a bases loaded walk in the sixth. Western pulled within one in the sixth before ESU tallied again in the eighth on another RBI hit by Racherbaumer, but Western scored the last three runs of the game to take game two of the series.
On Sunday, the Hornets dug themselves a hole early in a 13-10 defeat to lose the series. Western led 7-1 after two thanks to a five-run second inning. ESU fought back with three in the third on a Patryk Hernandez home run but Western got two back in the fifth. ESU made another push in the top of the sixth with four runs to get within 9-8 of the Griffons thanks to RBIs by Joe Daneff and Mason Sturdy before scoring in the seventh to tie the game on a Western passed ball, but the Griffs retook the lead with three runs in the bottom of the seventh. A Kadyn Williams RBI got the Black & Gold back on the board in the eighth, but Western got the run right back in the bottom half of the inning and E-State went in order in the ninth to end the game.
