Traffic control equipment is in place as the city of Emporia gears up for its next major road project.
Work officially begins this week on repaving US Highway 50 between Graphic Arts and Prairie streets. The city anticipates several significant traffic impacts through the project:
*US-50 will have traffic reduced to one lane in each direction at times, although the city says residents will still be able to get to businesses during construction.
*US-50 intersections at Industrial and Prairie will be temporarily closed, but not at the same time.
*Some drives may be blocked for up to 60 minutes for paving, or at least until the asphalt cools sufficiently for travel.
*The center turning lane will be closed periodically, so residents wanting to turn left across traffic may have to drive past their planned street or business, then turn around and get to their destination. Residents approaching the work zone from side streets may have right turns only if the center turn lane is closed.
This project is expected to last into mid- to late May.
