The Emporia State baseball team left 15 runners on base in a 6-5 defeat to Pittsburg State at the Trusler Sports Complex Tuesday. ESU took a 3-0 lead in the second on singles by Logan Myers and Mason Sturdy, but Pitt State answered with five in a row in the middle of the game. A Dom Oliverio solo home run cut the deficit to 5-4 in the seventh before Patryk Hernandez tied the game on an eighth inning single, but Pitt State scored in the ninth and ESU got the winning run on base in the bottom of the ninth but could not score. Seth Stover and Greg Ross combined to toss the first four innings for ESU and shutout the Gorillas allowing just four hits. Head coach Brad Hill talked about his frustration after the game.
Jolani Toledo finished 3-for-3 at the plate for the Hornets while Logan Myers was 3-for-6 with 3 RBIs. The loss gives Pitt State a sweep victory in the series and drops the Hornets to 16-23 and 7-17 in the MIAA. The Hornets return home Friday to host #2 Central Missouri.
