Two fatality wrecks near Emporia from April of last year have separate criminal cases developing in Lyon County District Court.
On Wednesday, Adonis Dailey will have a preliminary hearing at 9 am. Dailey, 23 of Wichita, is currently charged with first-degree murder in the traffic death of Kejuan Cortez Shugart as part of an alleged high speed chase on the Kansas Turnpike on April 29. Dailey is also charged with single counts of flee and elude and speeding.
Charges against Dailey follow an alleged incident that developed near the Matfield Green service exit and ended when Dailey allegedly rear-ended a semi trailer near the Emporia gate, killing a passenger, Shugart, and sending Dailey to Stormont-Vail Hospital with suspected serious injuries. Court documents indicate Dailey was traveling at over 125 mph, or 50 mph above the posted Turnpike speed limits, at times before the crash.
Meanwhile, May 10 is the next hearing date for Travis Edwards in his vehicular murder case. Edwards is accused of killing two people during a five-vehicle fatality crash that happened on US Highway 50 about four miles west of Emporia in early April 2023. The Marysville resident is accused of two counts of second-degree murder as well as three counts of aggravated battery and one count of interference with law enforcement.
