With its new pharmacy set to help meet the medical needs of the local community, leadership of Dillons Food Stores Wednesday also made a financial contribution to a local non-profit that works to combat another major need, hunger.
As part of the ribbon cutting ceremony at the new pharmacy location Wednesday morning, Dillons Food Stores Corporate Affairs Manager Sheila Regehr presented a $1,500 check to Emporia Rescue Mission Director Lee Alderman. The donation will go to support the work of the Abundant Harvest Food Kitchen with whom Dillons has had a long and successful relationship with for several years now.
Alderman says the donation from Dillons was “validating” and says that money will be put to good use almost immediately.
Alderman says Abundant Harvest pays roughly 10 cents on the dollar for food from the Kansas Food Bank which means they’ll be able to bring in quite a haul thanks to the Dillons donation.
Alderman says the donation from Dillons comes at a perfect time as the need for food continues to be great across the local community. He tells KVOE News they are “seeing so many new faces” regularly with the number of followers on their Facebook page rising from 1,500 to around 3,000 in the past year and a half.
Abundant Harvest has regular food distributions every Monday through Friday from 5 am to 7 am at the food kitchen, 1028 Whittier, and holds evening meals every Monday and Wednesday at 4 pm.
