Amy Aranda has served Lyon County as an assistant prosecutor for 21 years. She wants to rise to the County Attorney position this election cycle.
Before her time in the County Attorney’s Office, Aranda worked in private practice with Krueger and Larson as well as time with Kansas Legal Services. She received her law degree from Washburn University and taught Spanish at Osage City High before pursing her law career.
A Republican, Aranda is currently running unopposed. If elected, Aranda will follow Marc Goodman, who has led the department since 2000.
Aranda has been involved in several ventures while serving as a prosecutor. She is on the editorial board for the Kansas County and District Attorney Association’s Kansas Prosecutor magazine. She also serves on regional, state and national county and district attorney associations and was awards the Governor’s Community Champion for Victim’s Rights Award in 2015. In addition, Aranda is part of the SOS Multi-Disciplinary Team, the Sexual Assault Response Team, the Community-Coordinated Response Team and the Lyon County Mental Health Coalition. She says she would like to expand the department’s work with crime victims and witnesses, including new ways to keep them engaged through the court process. Lyon County’s elected positions now all have at least one candidate:
*Republican Amie Jackson is running to replace retiring Lyon County Clerk Tammy Vopat. Jackson is currently unopposed. Vopat has endorsed Jackson for the position.
*Republican Sheriff Jeff Cope is running for re-election. He is currently unopposed.
*Democrat Treasurer Sharon Gaede is running for re-election. She is currently unopposed.
*Republican Register of Deeds Wendy Weiss is running for re-election. She is unopposed.
*Republican Second District County Commissioner Doug Peck has a primary challenge from Sid Morgan.
*Republican Third District County Commission challenger Chris Bartel is currently unopposed.
Typically, the candidate filing and withdrawal deadline is at noon June 1, but that is on a Saturday. The deadline is now at noon Monday, June 3.
