Enrollment and employment converged as part of the lead conversation for the USD 252 Southern Lyon County Board of Education on Wednesday.
Superintendent Ryan Muhlig says there should be enough building capacity for enrollment if there is an influx of non-resident transfers, although he sees a large enrollment boom as unlikely. However, he says enrollment in July does not align well with the district’s employment needs. Having said that, Muhlig says USD 252 has an advantage against other rural districts.
Given the schedule, Muhlig believes employment needs will have to be sorted out once the enrollment process is finalized in July.
School districts across Kansas have to accept non-district transfers starting in July — or have lottery systems created if applications exceed available building capacities. Muhlig says USD 252 already has about 20 percent of its student body coming from outside the district boundaries.
