The latest round of planning for open enrollment was the lead item at the USD 251 North Lyon County school board meeting this week.
Superintendent Bob Blair is confident the district will have enough space for non-resident transfers once the academic year begins in July and classes begin in August. He tells KVOE News the district is concentrating on early grades.
Blair says the district is trying to give itself some leeway because transfers often move into the district by late summer — after the district has already accepted early transfers.
Board conversation revolved around overall enrollment numbers as well as ideal teacher-to-student ratios. Speaking of employment, Blair says the application window through June isn’t ideal and the district could be forced into a late hiring surge if there is a transfer boom.
School districts across Kansas have to accept non-district transfers starting in July — or have lottery systems created if applications exceed available building capacities.
