Americus was abuzz for the fourth annual Flint Hills Gravel Ride and Run activities Saturday.
Taking part was Lisa Ball of Lawrence. She first competed in 2022 and was back for more this past weekend.
Organizer Bobby Thompson says there were a lot of challenges, regardless of the ride or run length.
In all, over 760 people from 20 states participated.
The event has grown from one ride length to three rides and three run opportunities. It has also added several pre-view activities, including a gravel camp, sponsor expo meet-and-greet and live music. Project Playscape also had its now-annual spaghetti feed.
Thompson expects more “horizontal” growth next year, and he says both Flint Hills Gravel and Rock Ridge Gravel in Wabaunsee County could well be part of a six-event series by the time next year’s events are held.
