Controlled burn activity has picked up speed across the Flint Hills.
The Kansas Flint Hills Smoke Management Facebook page indicates over 585,000 acres have now been burned in the 21 counties under the Flint Hills Smoke Management Plan, which limits some outdoor burning through April.
Areawide, Wabaunsee County has seen over 48,000 acres burned, with Greenwood County approaching 38,000 acres and Lyon County just under 36,000 acres burned. As of the latest data period ending April 4, early 170,000 acres have been burned this season across the seven-county KVOE listening area.
The Smoke Management Plan allows for controlled pasture burns, ceremonial fires and grilling, but debris piles, crop residue and construction waste cannot be burned at all in April.
