David Sharlow may be a new name to the Emporia State leadership team, but he’s far from unfamiliar with ESU.
Sharlow was named as Emporia State’s first Dean of Visual + Performing Arts, with the announcement officially coming Thursday.
Over the past decade, Sharlow has held numerous roles at Missouri Southern State University. Currently, he is a professor of music and a Performing Arts department chair, but he has also been a director of music education, department chair in music and assistant to the dean of Missouri Southern’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. He also has a bachelor of music education in 1991 from Friends University, a master in music education from Wichita State and a doctor of philosophy in music education/curriculum and instruction from the University of Missouri Kansas City Conservatory of Music and Dance. Before moving into higher education in 2003, he also taught middle and high school music in Kansas.
Sharlow’s daughter and son-in-law attended Emporia State, and he says he went to a lot of Chi Omega functions while his daughter was attending. With that family history, Sharlow says “he’s coming home” his new position is “an awesome responsibility.”
Sharlow begins his new duties June 10.
