Chase County will be a busy place this upcoming weekend.
Cottonwood Falls will host the grand opening reception of the Symphony in the Flint Hills Prairie Art Exhibition and Auction from 1-3 pm Saturday. Juror Diana Werts says there will be a lot of art to see and enjoy.
Over 80 pieces of art will be on display at the Symphony in the Flint Hills Gallery on Saturday. The exhibit goes all the way through June 11. This also dovetails with an online auction at symphonyintheflinthills.org, with proceeds supporting artists and the mission to “heighten appreciation and knowledge of the Flint Hills tallgrass prairie.”
In the meantime, the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve has two activities overlapping each other north of Strong City. Spokesperson Heather Brown says members of the Santa Fe Trail Amateur Radio Club will operate two amateur radio stations from near the preserve’s historic limestone barn and will talk with other ham radio operators from around the world.
Brown also says there will be a special BARK Ranger Day, where residents can bring their dogs for a hike with a preserve range along the Southwind Nature Trail. BARK Ranger pendants are available while supplies last.
Both activities at the preserve start at 10 am, weather permitting. The preserve is noting National Park Week, which is observed through Sunday.
