Beacon For Hope and the Emporia Public Library is set to host a Children’s Mental Health event on Saturday.
The 3rd annual Mad, Sad, Glad event is for children in grades kindergarten through fifth grade, but other children in other grades are encouraged to attend. The event takes place from 3 to 4:30 p.m. at the Emporia Public Library with multiple activities including a scavenger hunt, storytime, crafts, prizes, snacks, and much more.
Beacon For Hope Director Melissa Owen says there’s a vast increase in a need for the focus on kids mental health among children in grades kindergarten through fifth grade.
Owen says there’s a lot of brainstorming as a team to reach more kids in a positive way to identify their emotions and start the conversation at home. Owen says it’s hard to find this age group finds it hard to find the words for this age group, especially for what they’re feeling but can express it with drawing, coloring, and stickers.
Resources are also available for parents or guardians to help facilitate the conversation with their children.
