The Emporia High softball team split its doubleheader with Iola on Friday.
Emporia High won the first game, 7-6, while Iola bounced back with a 5-4 victory in the finale, a game that ended after five innings due to no lights in Iola.
Iola took an early 1-0 through 2 1/2 innings before a lengthy delay due to weather. Emporia High scored all seven of its runs in the fourth inning. Four of them came via a walk. Addie Kirmer had a 2-run single followed by Yzabel Ultereas’s steal of home. Iola scored three in the sixth and two in the seventh and had the tying run on base but couldn’t get it across. Kirmer went 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Alivia Anno earned the win, going the distance allowing six runs on 12 hits and seven strikeouts.
In game two, Emporia High took an early 1-0 lead in the first thanks to an Alivia Anno RBI double. Iola responded with four in the first and never gave up the lead. The Lady Spartans scored one in the second on a bases load walk by Clara Williams. Emporia High rallied with two in the fifth with an RBI single by Maedeen McClure and a bases-loaded hit by a pitch by Bailey Schlesener. Emporia High had two opportunities but couldn’t get the game tying run across. Anno went four innings allowing five runs on 10 hits and four strikeouts.
Emporia High is now 5-11 on the season. The Lady Spartans travel to Topeka High on Tuesday.
