The Jets outhit the Hornets 17-9 in game one but lost 14-12 to ESU. NU scored first to take a 3-1 lead after one, but the Hornets outscored Newman 12-2 over the next three innings. Drew Jennings had his first career home run in the third before a Mason Sturdy three-run homer in the fourth, followed by Jennings’ second long ball of the day. The Jets mounted a comeback with a three-homer inning in a four-run fourth but came up short. Eli Hernandez (1-4) picked up the win while Hayden Baumwart earned his first save.
ESU scored two in the ninth to complete the sweep in a 6-5 victory. E-State got a two-out single by Sturdy to take the early lead, but the Jets tied the game in the second. An Andrew Rantz homer in the sixth off the left field foul pole put ESU back in front 4-2. The Jets took the lead with three runs in the eighth before Mason Sturdy tied the game on a single in the ninth. On the same play, Newman threw the ball away and pinch runner Joel Anderson just beat the tag at the plate for the game-winning run. Head coach Brad Hill was proud of the team.
Sturdy drove in three runs in game two and said the team was well aware of what they needed to do to have a chance to make the postseason.
Game three is set for Monday afternoon with a start time to be announced.
