Tuesday is an important deadline for the Emporia Animal Shelter.
The city of Emporia has set Tuesday as the date for interested parties to submit requests for proposal if they want to operate the shelter, and all three parties formally expressing interest earlier this year — the Humane Society of the Flint Hills, Raise Your Paws, both of Emporia, and Prairie Paws of Ottawa — have said they will submit their proposals by the deadline.
RFP information has not been released by any of the three organizations.
The Humane Society currently gets $132,000 per year from the city for operating the shelter at 1216 Hatcher. The shelter has basically been full to overfull for years, with over 370 animal intakes last year.
The city plans an RFP review process by late May, with the City Commission making its decision in June. The new contract begins Aug. 1.
