Senior citizens in Chase County may have received a letter asking them to sign a petition on a Meals on Wheels program. Officials say that solicitation is a scam.
The letter is ostensibly from Meals on Wheels America, based out of Arlington, Virginia. It says about 10 million seniors face the threat of hunger and 50 percent of seniors living alone lack enough income to pay for basic needs, while a third of Meals on Wheels programs have waiting lists of seniors who need food but the programs don’t have enough funding to meet the need. It asks for gifts for up to $50 to help defray costs and help seniors avert a “hunger cliff” — and it asks residents to sign the Protect Seniors Petition directed to Congress.
Chase County Sheriff Jacob Welsh says the county’s Senior Center administrator, Deb Haglund, has determined the letter is a scam and will not benefit the Chase County facility in any way.
Residents with questions about the letter can call the Chase County Senior Center at 620-273-8511.
