Downtown Emporia will be a busy place on Saturday.
Along with the Dynamic Discs Open Block Party, Cinco de Mayo festivities will occur from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. in the 600 and 700 blocks of Commercial.
Hispanics of Today and Tomorrow member Patricia Saenz Reyes says she anticipates more people will attend this year’s festivities that are not just from Emporia.
Saenz Reyes says the support from the community for the event has been great spreading the word even with DDO festivities occuring.
HOTT member Katy Peraza says the event is a good way to show off different cultures.
HOTT will give 16 $500 scholarships, the most it has awarded, to Emporia High students attending either Emporia State University or Flint Hills Technical College. Peraza says she’s excited to see how much money this year’s royalty raises, with funds helping out kids in the community and even themselves for funds for college.
There will be over 50 vendors with various food, dancers, Zumba, music, a jalapeno eating contest, a Takis eating contest, and a screaming contest.
