The Emporia High softball team cruised to its first victory of the Spartan Classic, 16-1, in four innings over Life Prep on Friday at the Trusler Sports Complex.
Life Prep jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning but after that, it was all Emporia High. The Lady Spartans scored two in the first, highlighted by Molly Williams’s RBI single. Addie Kirmer stole home for the only run of the second. In the third, Emporia High scored five runs highlighted by RBI doubles by Yzabel Ultreras and Kirmer. In the fourth, Emporia High tacked on eight highlighted by a 2-run double by Marley Sewell. Two runs were scored via walk, while two were steals of home. Maedeen McClure went 2-for-2 with three RBIs, while Sewell and Ultreras each drove in two. Alivia Anno allowed just one run on one hit and had five strikeouts.
Sewell said once the Lady Spartans got in a rhythm, everything clicked.
Emporia High coach Tommy McClure said getting the win was huge for their confidence.
Emporia High is now 6-11 and will play Blue Valley Southwest at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Turnbull Field.
