Emporia Police say the woman who climbed to the roof of an empty Emporia hotel and threatened to jump Wednesday had multiple outstanding warrants and was arrested.
Police Capt. Ray Mattas says officers went to 2700 West 18th, the site of the former Clarion Hotel, around 11 am as they tried to serve warrants on 39-year-old Amy K Worthy. She was found inside one of the hotel rooms but would not come out when officers made their presence known. Instead, she evaded law enforcement and got to the roof.
Officers negotiated for over two hours as Worthy refused to surrender, even as officers got onto the roof. Eventually, officers got Worthy into custody and arrested her on the outstanding warrants and suspected interference with law enforcement.
Formal charges are pending. There has been no official statement to KVOE News that mental health issues were part of this incident.
Documents on the Kansas District Court Public Access Portal indicate Worthy recently had two bench warrants issued, with one warrant for allegedly violating a protection order in September 2023 and failing to appear in court. The other involves alleged battery on law enforcement, interference with law enforcement and second-offense driving under the influence in October 2023 and subsequently failing to adhere to bond conditions.
