With projected travel numbers at or near record levels for the upcoming Memorial Day weekend, depending on the category, Kansas AAA Public and Government Affairs Manager Shawn Steward says you need to pack your patience along with everything else.
AAA says there will be almost 44 million travelers nationwide, just short of the 44 million travelers for Memorial Day weekend 2005 — AAA’s current record — and all categories, standard vehicle traffic, airlines and other modes of transportation are seeing potential increases over last year.
If there is any good news, some associated costs are either steady with last year or down somewhat. Gas prices are tentatively set to be similar to last year, but they are currently dipping statewide and are now at $3.11 locally. Generally speaking, domestic hotels, domestic car rentals and international car rentals are cheaper this year, while international hotels are about the same. Domestic and international airfare is slightly more expensive this year.
Steward says this is a good time to reach out to your mechanic and get your vehicle checked for the summer season. He says tires and batteries cause the most roadside assistance calls to AAA.
