Lyon County Commissioners have approved a partial road closure for the upcoming Unbound Gravel series of races.
Per commission approval Thursday, Burlingame Road will now have a one-lane closure between Roads 190 and 180 throughout the Unbound event. A pilot car and signage will also be used to help direct traffic around the closure site.
Thursday’s action follows initial conversations between race organizers and county leadership in late March when organizers sought a full road closure in the area. Local law enforcement and safety personnel expressed some concerns with that proposal leading to additional conversations over the last month and Thursday’s revised request.
New Unbound Race Director Sean Thurman says he is pleased with the compromise and believes it is a perfect balance of safety for riders and convenience for motorists.
Lifetime has hired Roadsafe, a traffic control agency who will handle the closure and other traffic-related matters for the event. The Unbound series of races and corresponding activities will take place Friday, May 31 with the launch of Unbound XL with all other race distances launching Saturday, June 1.
In other matters Thursday, commissioners received an update on operations from Emporia Main Street Director Casey Woods. Woods focused much of his time on the recent slate of Main Street activities including the Cinco de Mayo celebration, Dynamic Discs Open Block Party and La Grind Gravel bike race all of which took place in the downtown corridor between May 4th and 5th.
Woods also spoke to recent grant announcements and development projects which have commenced throughout the early part of the calendar year. He says regular updates like this are important opportunities.
In separate business, commissioners also approved a quote totaling more than $56,000 for a 2024 Silverado 2500 pickup from Longbine Autoplaza submitted by the Lyon County Road and Bridge Department as well as a $40,000 request for Brown and Brown Insurance to be paid in quarterly installments presented by County Controller Dan Williams.
The Lyon County Commission will reconvene for its weekly action meeting at 9 am Thursday inside of the Lyon County Courthouse Commission Chambers.
