The Emporia firefighter battling cancer the past year has passed away.
After announcing the cancer battle, Emporia Fire studiously avoided announcing the firefighter’s name, but EFD on Thursday announced the passing of Greg Rausch, calling him “a true hero who served with unwavering dedication as a firefighter and paramedic.”
Rausch joined Emporia Fire 14 years ago and helped to develop the Fire Department’s Honor Guard. He was also active on the family farm. According to a GoFundMe account, was diagnosed with non-Hodgkins lymphoma a year ago. He then developed leptomeningeal disease, where cancer cells get into the cerebrospinal fluid and, in Rausch’s case, his brain. A large mass was discovered on his spine early this month, and the decision was made to end medical treatments. Firefighters held a procession across Emporia in Rausch’s honor late last week.
Emporia Fire says Rausch “faced cancer with the same strength and resilience” that he used to battle fires, “inspiring us all with his unwavering spirit. His legacy of service and sacrifice will forever be remembered and cherished by those who had the privilege of knowing him.”
Funeral services are pending.
