Emporia High will have athletes in 12 events in next week’s KSHSAA State Track and Field Championships at Cessna Stadium on the campus of Wichita State University.
The Spartans and Lady Spartans combined to have 11 athletes qualify for state at the Class 5A regional hosted by Bishop Carroll on Friday. Emporia High had one regional champion in Paige Newland who won the triple jump with a mark of 36-9.50. Newland will also be going to state in the long jump after a third-place finish and a jump of 17-2. Daghyn True will be going to state in the distance races. He finished second in the 1,600m (4:30.44) and took fourth in the 3,200m (9:48.86). Harley Smith qualified for state in two of the sprints. She finished second in the 400m (1:00.07) and took fourth in the 200m (26.78). Blake Spellman will be going to state in three events. He finished second in the 400m with a time of 50.22. Spellman joins Harry Trelc, Calvin Seeley and RJ Tabares on the 4x100m relay team that finished second (43.46). Spellman, Trelc, Tabares and Garrett LeBlanc make up the 4x400m relay team that finished fourth (3:30.18). LeBlanc also qualified for state with a fourth place finish in the triple jump (41-1). Jeremiah Huber rounds out the state qualifiers as he finished second in the pole vault with a personal best clearance of 14-9. Mia Trujillo finished second in discus (111-8).
In the team standings, the Spartans finished fifth with 49 points, while the Lady Spartans finished seventh with 46 points.
State Track and Field will begin at 8 a.m. Friday at Cessna Stadium. KVOE will provide reports from Wichita beginning at 9 a.m. on Friday and Saturday.
