Ron Slaymaker is on the move again coaching high school basketball.
After three seasons as the Olpe girls basketball coach, Slaymaker has been hired as the next head girls basketball coach at Topeka High according to TopSports.News. Slaymaker’s hiring is pending approval by the USD 501 Board of Education. Slaymaker guided Olpe to two state appearances in Class 1A-Division I in 2023 and 2024 after replacing longtime coach Jesse Nelson, who retired after 44 years in 2021. Before arriving in Olpe, Slaymaker spent seven seasons serving as the girls basketball coach at Chase County. He guided the Bulldogs to two state tournament appearances in Class 2A in 2015 and 2017. Slaymaker served as the head men’s basketball coach at Emporia State University from 1970-1998 with a record of 462-365.
Slaymaker takes over for Brittany Redmond, who was let go due to unknown circumstances in the middle of this past season. Slaymaker will be Topeka High’s third girls basketball coach in four seasons. The Lady Trojans finished the 2023-24 season with a 5-15. Emporia High will face Topeka High on February 7, 2025, in Topeka and February 21, 2025, in Emporia.
