Downtown Emporia is included in a significant grant from the federal government.
The Biden administration has announced a $1.5 million Brownfields Multipurpose, Assessment and Cleanup grant to the Flint Hills Regional Council through the Investing in America agenda. The Regional Council will oversee the grant, which will be used to update the brownfield site inventory, create cleanup plans and support what the federal government calls “community engagement activities.”
The grant news release from the Environmental Protection Agency lists Emporia’s downtown and Sixth Avenue revitalization area in general and the former Spic N Span property, 17 West Fourth, and Short Stop at 923 Commercial specifically as priority sites, as well as locations in Herington, Junction City and Manhattan.
