The 2024 NCAA Division II National Outdoor Track and Field Championships aren’t just bringing some of the best athletes in the world to Emporia, it’s also bringing major economic benefits.
Some of those benefits have already materialized in the form of renovations to ESU’s Welch Stadium over the last few months. The better than $1.8 million project, which included a new track, seating, guard rails and more, led to nearly $570,000 being spent with local and area companies.
The City of Emporia also made a one-time contribution of $400,000 for new lighting in the stadium. As if that wasn’t enough, even more dollars for the local community are on the way with more than 750 athletes, as well as coaches, families and fans, now in town through the weekend.
Their presence is estimated to bring around $1.5 million to Emporia through lodging, food and beverage purchases and local retail sales.
The 2024 national championships officially begin at 10 am Thursday at Welch Stadium. Over the past week, KVOE has spoken with several representatives of ESU Athletics including Associate Athletics Director in Charge of Media Relations Don Weast.
Weast says not only will the event be a major economic benefit for the community, it will also give area residents the chance to see not only some of the best athletes in the country but the entire world.
Weekend passes for the National Championships are $30 for adults or $20 for students and seniors. Single-day passes can also be purchased for $15 for adults or $10 for students and seniors.
The 2024 NCAA National Outdoor Track and Field Championships will run through Saturday. For tickets or if you would like to volunteer during the event you can visit NCAATickets.com or ESUHornets.com.
