With Rollie Martin now out of the running for a fifth term serving the Lyon County Commission Third District, the field is starting to fill up.
Just this week, Warren Schmidt, Jon Vopat and Jarom Smith filed as Republicans, joining Chris Bartel as hopefuls. Schmidt says his time as a farmer and his 30-year career with PrairieLand Partners John Deere has helped to root him in Lyon County.
Schmidt says he wants to keep Lyon County operations business as usual while not losing sight of the county’s “values and integrity.”
Vopat, the husband of retiring County Clerk Tammy Vopat and a longtime manager at S&S Oil and Propane, agrees that Lyon County government is in good shape now.
Smith says his business ownership experience will help him if he’s elected.
With the number of candidates, there will be a primary for the Third District Seat. Democrat Bill Nienstedt is currently unopposed for that half of the bracket.
There is also a Republican primary for the County Commission District Two seat. Incumbent Doug Peck is being challenged by Sid Morgan. All other county department head positions have one candidate currently filed.
The candidate filing and withdrawal deadline is noon June 1. The primary election is Aug. 6. The general election is Nov. 5.
