Day two of the NCAA National Outdoor Track and Field Championship meet is now underway and already history has been made inside of Welch Stadium.
ESU Associate Athletics Director and Head of Media Relations Don Weast says several meet records were broken during day one of the competition including the time for the men’s 100 meter set back in 1972.
Weast says even more history could be made Friday with some of the top athletes in the country and the world set to take to the field. Among the list of competitors will be the 16th-ranked women’s 100-meter hurdler in the world and defending national champion Denisha Cartwright of Minnesota State.
Several more defending champions will be in action as well Friday including Wes Ferguson of Nebraska Kearney who will compete in the men’s 800-meter, Auna Childress of Pittsburg State in the women’s triple jump and Cheyenne Williamson Nesbitt of Saginaw Valley State in the women’s heptathlon.
After Thursday night’s fireworks display had to be pushed back slightly due to a weather delay, Emporia State University has announced it will have a second display Friday night to close out the day’s activities. The fireworks show is set to begin between 8:30 and 8:40 pm.
The national meet will wrap up on Saturday. For additional information or to purchase tickets for the meet visit NCAA.com or ESUhornets.com.
Tickets are also available at the stadium.
