The Kansas State High School Activities Association State Track and Field Championships are underway in Wichita.
Emporia High has its first state champion in track for the first time since 2016.
Sophomore Paige Newland won the Class 5A girls triple jump with a jump of 37 feet, winning the state championship by four inches over Janae Kelly of Andover and Saliyah Johnson of Arkansas City.

Junior Daghyn True finished fourth in the 3,200m with a time of 9:28.56. True was seeded 11th entering the event.
Emporia High’s third medalist of the day came from Jeremiah Huber who finished eighth in pole vault with a clearance of 13-0. Huber medaled in his final meet after finishing ninth at state a season ago.
In track prelims, Emporia High’s boys 4x100m relay team of Harry Trelc, Calvin Seeley, Blake Spellman and RJ Tabares missed qualifying for finals for the event with a 13th place finish with a time of 44.72. Harley Smith missed qualifying for finals in the 400m taking ninth with a time of 1:01.13. Smith did qualify for the finals in the 200m by finishing seventh with a time of 25.95. Blake Spellman missed qualifying for the finals in the 400m taking 10th with a time of 51.83. The boys 4x400m relay team of Spellman, Tabares, Trelc and Garrett LeBlanc missed qualifying for finals finishing 15th in 3:34.28. LeBlanc finished 14th in the triple jump with a mark of 39-9. Mia Trujillo finished 11th in discus with a mark of 102-6.
Areawide, Lyndon’s Kaedin Massey finished second in the 2A discus with a throw of 164-2.
Massey finished second in the shot put (50-10.75).
Areawide in track prelims, MdCV’s Akyra Traver finished ninth in the prelims of the 100m hurdles and missed qualifying for finals with a time of 16.54. Madison’s Octavian Dean missed qualifying for finals in the 110m hurdles taking 14th with a time of 17.06. Lyndon’s Josh Vignery missed qualifying in the 110m hurdles taking ninth (16.06). The Burlingame girls 4x100m relay team of Madison Hovestadt, Kaylin Noonan, Willow Wyatt and Harper Seele missed qualifying for finals taking 12th (52.16). The Lyndon girls 4x100m relay team of Lexi Totty, Ranna Marcotte, Jaedyn Segrist and Trysten Sowers missed qualifying for finals taking ninth (52.47). The Burlington girls 4x100m relay team will have the top time heading into finals (49.30). The team consists of Alexa Ratzlaff, Kelly Hoback, Olivia Lyons and Haylei Potter. The Chase County boys 4x100m relay team of Luke Budke, Brock Griffin, Wyatt Griffin and Tag Groh have the top time in 2A (44.09) heading to finals, while Lyndon’s 4x100m missed qualifying for finals (12th, 45.36). Chase County’s boys quartet of the 4x100m also made up the 4x400m relay that has the top time heading to finals (3:28.67 ). Olpe’s Kadey Robert finished 14th in the prelims of the 1A 400m (1:05.94). Sowers missed qualifying in the 2A 400m (10th, 1:02.44). Lebo’s Grayson Shoemaker finished 14th in the 1A 400m (54.51). Groh and Brock Griffin both qualified for 2A finals in the 400m. Groh 2nd 50.37 and Brock Griffin 7th 51.54 . Osage City’s Quenten Stark finished seventh in the prelims of the 3A 400m (50.80) to qualify for finals. The Burlington boys 4x100m relay team of Zane Hoback, Cameron Stadel, Emmett Hazen and Brody Anderson finished 13th (45.16). Hartford’s Grayson Dailey (3rd, 400m 51.49) and qualified for finals. Wyatt finished 15th in the 200m (28.28). Sowers 12th in the 200m (26.66). Keely Hoback qualified for the finals of 3A 200m taking 3rd (25.26). Dailey qualified for finals in the 1A 200m taking seventh (23.41). Groh qualified for the finals of 2A 200m taking 6th (22.69). Olpe girls 4x400m relay of Ella Wilson, Milly Bailey, Aubryn Garriott and Kadey Robert finished 13th (4:24.26). Lyndon’s 4x400m relay team of Peyton Weston, Lexi Totty, Jaedyn Segrist and Trysten Sowers finished 11th (4:21.63). Lebo boys 4x400m relay team of Corey Reese, Eli Hauff, Kaden Balding and Grayson Shoemaker finished 15th (3:52.31). The Olpe boys 4x400m relay team of Jesse Kuhlmann, Cale Steffes, Levi Heins and Kaleb Arnold finished 16th (3:53). Northern Heights Ellei McCrory won the 1A 3,200m (10:59.37), while Olpe’s Lilly Skalsky finished eighth (12:25.65). Lebo’s Caleb Durst finished fourth in the 1A 3,200m (10:04.45), while Olpe’s Kaleb Arnold was 11th (10:22.89) and Isaac Arnold was 16th (10:57.28). Chase County’s Kinslea Glanville finished 16th in the 2A 3,200m(15:34.85).
Areawide in other field events, Osage City’s Quenten Stark was ninth in high jump (5-10) and Tate Smith 13th (5-10). In 1A boys pole vault, Madison’s Cruz Leiser (11th, 12-0), Lebo’s Corey Reese (13th, 11-0), and Olpe’s Colten Wolf did not clear a mark on three tries. In 2A girls pole vault, Chase County’s Kinzie Rogers (10th,8-6). Burlingame’s Harper Seele (11th, 34-9) in the 1A girls shot put. In 1A girls high jump, Hartford Trinity Windle (13th, 4-10) and Northern Heights’ Reese Houck (14th, 4-10) and Lebo’s Alexis Hutchinson was 15th (4-10). In 2A boys javelin, Chase County’s Nano Zuniga (15th, 127-2), Lyndon’s Tanner Heckel finished third (179-6). In 3A discus, Osage City’s Chase Williams finished fourth (152-6) while Burlington’s Michael Ianacone took sixth (146-8). Chase County’s Madelyn Wilson won the 2A shot put (40-3) winning the event over Mission Valley’s Emma Slade (39-8.75). Heckel finished second in the 2A triple jump (45-0.75). Madison’s Hayden Helm 13th in the discus (130-11), Southern Coffey County’s Reeston Cox was 14th (116-1) and Lebo’s Zach Oswald finished 15th (113-5). Osage City’s Kasen Parsons finished fourth in the 3A javelin (177-10). Garriott finished 11th in 1A triple jump (32-8.75). Chase County’s Wyatt Griffin finished fifth in 2A high jump (6-2). Lexi Boss won the 3A discus . Audrey Peek finished 12th in the 1A pole vault (8-6). Helm finished 10th in the 1A javelin (150-4) while Cox was 12th (148-10). Council Grove’s Lakoddah Downes was eighth in the 3A pole vault (12-6) while Josiah Smith finished 11th (11-6).
