Three Minnesota residents were killed in Saturday’s two-vehicle crash northwest of Council Grove.
According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, a pickup truck and SUV collided head-on at the junction of Kelso Road and P Avenue, just northwest of Council Grove Lake and six miles northwest of Council Groove, shortly before 4 pm. Troopers say the truck, driven by 53-year-old Andrew Steele of White City, was northbound on Kelso and driving in the center of street when it went head-on into the SUV, driven by 33-year-old Troy Sabean of Roseville, Minnesota.
Sabean was killed, as were two passengers, 69-year-old Ann Porter of Fergus Falls and 33-year-old Emma Porter of Roseville. The Morris County Sheriff’s Office says all three were pronounced dead at the scene. Two others in the SUV, 68-year-old Paul Porter and 64-year-old Kathleen Lebarron, both of Edina, Minnesota, were taken to Stormont-Vail Hospital in Topeka for suspected serious injuries.
Steele was taken to Morris County Hospital in Council Grove for suspected serious injuries. A passenger, 51-year-old Lisa Steele of White City, was taken to University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas, with suspected serious injuries. All five people in Sabean’s vehicle were wearing seatbelts, while Lisa Steele was also wearing her seatbelt at the time of the crash.
Troopers have not said why the Steele vehicle was in the middle of the road at the time of the wreck.

At least three people were killed in a head-on wreck northwest of Council Grove on Saturday.
The Morris County Sheriff’s Office responded to P Avenue and Kelso Road shortly before 4 pm, along with Council Grove Police, Council Grove Fire and Morris County EMS. They found a vehicle with two occupants, both of whom were ultimately taken to Morris County Hospital with suspected serious injuries. The second vehicle had five people inside, two of whom were taken to Morris County with life-threatening injuries and the other three dead at the scene.
The Kansas Highway Patrol is investigating.
Morris County deputies say Kelso Road will be shut down for “an extended” time due to the investigation.
