Foster Parent Appreciation Month concludes Friday.
Nearly 6,000 children and teenagers are currently in foster care in Kansas, including over 100 in Lyon County.
KVOE’s most recent Talk of Emporia highlighted the work of CALM Foster Care, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary. CEO Amy Harmon says it’s gratifying to meet the needs of both foster children and parents.
Social worker and recruiter Missy Floyd encourages residents with any interest to take the first step and begin the process.
CALM currently serves 35 homes and 75 children monthly. CALM began as an offshoot of Catholic Charities after the local agency changed its mission statement. It currently offers foster care involving Department for Children and Families and non-DCF children as well as residential placement, offering training, licensure, home studies and other services whether families choose to strictly foster or move towards adoption.
Support specialist Janell Carter says it’s important for agencies to support both parent and child.
