Nearly two years ago, fire destroyed several units and killed one person at the Low Housing Development in Cottonwood Falls. Next week, a project officially begins to replace the destroyed space.
Complex manager Deanna Wessel says there will be a formal groundbreaking at 10 am June 4 at the facility, 101 East Eighth. This follows the fire in late July 2022 that destroyed the B building, wiping out four living units while killing 74-year-old Sharon Tatman. Wessel says the plan is replace the apartments and community recreation room while adding a storm shelter.
Wessel says the Cottonwood Falls Housing Authority is using a combination of insurance money, a $1 million matching grant, loan funding from Citizens State Bank and raised rents to pay for the new building.
